Princess Glitoris - INTERVIEW
How did the persona of Princess Glitoris first come about? (the name, genre, etc.)
The name was a really random one, I was actually just partying at the time and randomly came up with it in my notes app about a year and a half before I ever touched decks. I always wanted my DJ name to be a character - if you know me I loveee glitter, diamante everything, sparkles etc. so I wanted a name that reflected that part of me but also being something not too serious. I feel like it actually matches the music I play really well because I have a real vibe of just have fun & it’s not that serious. I love playing bouncy upbeat music, anything with a groove to it whether it’s slow or fast. I love sexy cheeky lyrics in tunes. I’ve always had a really broad music taste so I wouldn’t necessarily box myself to one genre but I’m certainly very techno in the head, and it just comes from what I grew up going to & listening to when I was in my teens. Kind of just stuck to what I knew & loved!
Are there any artists or scenes that helped shape your sound early on?
Yeah for definite - one of my favourite producer/DJs when I first started was Bad Boombox, he’s got that really bouncy sexy sound. I remember listening to a mix on his series Hot Meal Records & there was not one drop in energy the whole time, and I was like that’s what I want to make people feel. An all time favourite is Tommy Holohan, certainly got the samba/tribal/hardgroove sounds that I adore, but also plays some of the harder fringes of techno that I really enjoy too. Another would for sure be Ben Sims - he could mix water and oil and has always been a huge inspo for me.
What song from your set usually reacts best with the audience? Is this also a song that is one of your favourites to play?
My go to song for a great crowd reaction is without a doubt Ned Bennett - Carnival Revival. Every single time I play it the crowd goes absolutely nuts for it, it’s a complete belter of a tune.
You have some of the best outfits of anyone in the Belfast scene at the moment, do you think that fashion has tied itself to your set or musical identity in any way?
Aw thank you. I’ve always been really into fashion so I think it definitely is a part of my DJ persona. I used to dress super colourful when I was younger, neon & glitter everything, and I think as I’ve gotten older my style has become more rounded with what I really like now and what suits me best. But with that I absolutely love being extra, lots of accessorising - lots of my style is heavily inspired by the 2000s. I’d rarely have an outfit going out that doesn’t have multiple patterns on or diamantés, or god forbid you ever see me without long maximalist acrylic nails. It’s super fun & it’s a great way to express myself!
Does your set tend to be more improvisational based or strategically planned? Do you think this deciphers the vibes of your set?
Hmm - depends on the gig if I’m honest! I think definitely more at the beginning I’d plan a bit more out of nervousness but I prefer to wing it a lot more now. I’m constantly downloading new tunes so I usually make a playlist for the gig and have a few different vibes / genres within it. I’ll organise them so that the tunes within that genre are all in one part of the playlist, so I know roughly most things will go well together. This type of prep is kinda necessary for me just so I can speed mix as this is my preference for sets, having the sounds constantly changing. However with bigger gigs I’m definitely more planned, and yeah it does change the vibe I think - some of the more freestyled sets are my favourite but I’ve definitely really enjoyed more planned sets too as I’m excited about what the crowd is going to hear.
What's a song you wish you could've discovered earlier?
I found a record by Keepsakes called Blunt Clout Trauma when I was in Berlin in Sep 2025 and there’s a tune on it called Criminal Drum Lab - and my godddd I was wondering why I had never heard that tune before then. Complete cracker.
How has your social media presence and online culture in general affected your job as a creative?
I’d say you definitely need to be on the ball and it can feel like you’re falling behind if you’re not posting all the time. I personally am not really great at the TikTok thing and I’ve found myself really having to remind myself to use it, but I really just don’t enjoy doing the videos for it - I’m definitely more in the Instagram generation! I think social media has definitely helped me as I’d think myself as having a good eye for it and what looks good, and I understand a lot about marketing etc so I’d be silly to say it hasn’t been a leverage for me. But I would say I still struggle a bit with posting as regularly as I should on different apps, which can hinder getting gigs etc. Definitely another thing to worry about in music nowadays.
Who are you most excited to catch at AVA this year?
I am very very excited to see Blawan. Seen him twice before and he’s absolutely incredible, so to see a live set will be mind blowing. Also very excited to see Dj Gigola - never been lucky enough to catch her and she’s a big favourite of mine! In terms of locals I’m buzzing to see Matcha opening the festival up followed by Sophie. Really excited to see my boyfriend IndeniaL - he’s got a great time slot this year which I feel he really deserves! Chris Flannigan is a personal favourite of mine so he’ll be great, and super excited to catch AOIFE before I’m on. If I were to name all of the ones I’m going to catch I’d be here all day but they know who they are!
